Artist Statement

I sense a painting even before it arrives. For me, a work of art begins with a feeling, an image or glimpse into a memory. The beginning is like wandering around in a dream. I see flashes of the dream, some I can harness and others I return to later in the process. As I create, it is just me and the art, each work is a personal relationship. This relationship always has ups and downs, which shape my decisions at each phase.

Living a creative life is what matters most for me. In 2015, I started feeling another quest coming my way. I took a 7 day silent retreat and it opened a gap that showed me a change. The word change is the same as moving forward or backwards. It simply means changing directions. This is how I paint, I have no fear of moving a painting forward or backwards towards completion. I am intuitively guided to where it is meant to be.

I love the mysterious nature of life and death. There are always phases of beginnings or endings; like a roaring wave or an ethereal sky. The sense of movement is always present in my work. I am deeply connected to transformation, rebirth, change, and the subtle decisions made during the making of art.

“At this moment he no longer feels he is responsible for the picture, it has acquired a life of its own, it takes over as if he were allowed to be a mere onlooker of a marvelous spectacle…now it becomes a potent meaning of evoking and relating all sorts of ideas, a means of conveying an awareness of kinships, resemblances, identifications, a means of meditation.”

- Jean Dubuffet, French painter 1901- 1985

I am continually exploring new images, ideas, textures and mediums. Currently working with acrylics, inks, oils and pastels. The best I can do is to let myself go, release control over the creative process and let the relationship develop.
